Meteoroids and the Crater it leaves behind
Thursday, February 4, 2010
We did this experiment to "watch" and learn about the formation of craters. We wanted to see how the size, angle, and speed of a meteorite's impact affects the properties of craters. This is what we found...
- First we used white flour and filled up a pan about half way.
2. Next we covered the flour with cocoa.
3. We chose different sizes, shapes, and weights of our "meteoroids."
I let the children speculate on what they thought would happen. Then we experimented :D
Wow!
All of our "craters" were the same shape... round. In fact, all craters that have been seen on the Moon and Earth are pretty much circular. The reason is that an explosion occurs on impact and the forces associated with an explosion are always spherically symmetrical.

Oh, this is SUCH a cool science experiment (mmmm- and I bet it smelled good too!).
I don't know if you've heard of the "Sunday Science" link up, but the next time "Adventures in Mommydom" puts up the post, you NEED to link this up! So many people could learn from this!
The address is:

(Ticia, the blog's author, is morning the loss of a friend right now, so I'm not sure when she will have her link up again. Just keep checking it out!)
Loni, this is too cool! I love the video too! It was neat to hear your voice. =)
I watched the video with my 6 year old son. He thought it was cool. So did I!
